WEIGHT CONTROL

Approximately 42% of Americans will be considered obese by 2030. This is a staggering prediction! It seems that we are on a never-ending quest for that magic bullet. But is there really a magic fix for obesity? I fear not, as obesity is a complex issue that oftentimes requires a multidisciplinary approach. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine may be another option for weight management.

In the recent May 2012 publication of Obesity Reviews, a team of researchers performed a detailed systematic review of clinical studies looking at acupuncture and obesity. When compared to no treatment and pharmaceutical medications, the acupuncture studies showed:
  • Greater weight loss
  • Decreased BMI
  • Decreased weight circumference

As impressed as I was with this recent systematic review, I can remember a time when I was not so convinced of acupuncture’s effect on weight management. Confession: Once upon a time, I would cringe as patients asked if acupuncture could help with weight loss.

I, too, have battled weight my entire life as I have a very strong family history of obesity and other co-morbidities. Just looking at a cupcake would cause a 15 lb. weight gain, let alone eating one. I clearly recall a childhood memory of exercising with Richard Simmons on TV with the hopes of getting out of my “husky” jeans. I established a strong opinion that there was absolutely no easy fix in the battle of the bulge; a proper regimen of diet and exercise was the only viable option for weight management, end of story. I was, admittedly, myopic.

In Beijing, my perspective began to change slightly after treating countless patients for weight-related complaints. We encouraged patients to be diligent with healthful diet and exercise habits prior to initiating acupuncture treatments. Week after week, patients began reporting success in weight loss, but, in my mind, I always questioned whether it was the acupuncture that helped, or simply because they were dieting and working out regularly.

At some point in my career, I began to finally open myself to the idea that, yes, there is validity to Eastern Medicine’s approach to weight management. I began paying attention to my peers and my mentors. I began listening to my patients as they reported decreased cravings for salt and sugar, suppressed appetite, and weight loss. I went back to square one and opened my Eastern Medicine textbooks to relearn all that I had subconsciously closed myself off from learning.

These days, I make a concerted effort to stay current on what the scientific community has to say regarding this topic.

In addition to acupuncture’s efficacy on weight loss, scientists have provided explanations on howacupuncture promotes weight loss:
  • Increases metabolism: Auricular (ear) acupuncture has been shown to temporarily increase basal metabolic rate and suppresses appetite via effects on the autonomic nervous system.
  • Improves insulin resistance: There is some data supporting acupuncture’s effectiveness on addressing a condition called insulin resistance, which is associated with metabolic syndrome. This is done by altering activity of the sympathetic nervous system and possibly correcting the insulin signal defect.
  • Decreases abdominal fat: An MRI study demonstrated a decrease in abdominal fat storage after acupuncture treatments.
  • Appetite suppression: In the rat model, electro-acupuncture influenced the hypothalamus and obesity-related hormones to promote appetite suppression.
Clearly, obesity is not a simple issue, nor is it easy to fix. Focus on optimal health by way of proper nutrition, maintaining an active lifestyle, and applying stress management techniques. Using integrative approaches like acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine may just be the additional resource needed to enhance your weight-management regime.

Obesity is the medical term used to describe the state of being overweight to the point where it is harmful to your health. Click on the link below for some shocking facts!!!

How does tcm view obesity

what can tcm do for obesity??
acupuncture has the ability to influence obesity hormones. Research measuring the effectiveness of acupuncture for weight loss found treatments increased ghrelin, a hormone that controls meal initiation and decreased leptin, the hormone that regulates fat storage and metabolism.
The guiding principal is that acupuncture can power up any other weight control strategy by curbing appetite, quelling cravings, boosting metabolism, improving digestion, regulating obesity-related hormones and enhancing the way nutrients are used. It also strengthens the function of the liver, the organ that produces many chemicals critical for digestion, processing nutrients and breaking down of fats.

FACTS

·  A  study published in The Journal of Medical Acupuncture found that participants receiving acupuncture lost more than three times more weight than the control group.

·  In a study conducted by the University of Adelaide in Australia in 1998, 95 percent of the participants receiving electro-stimulation on acupuncture points reported appetite suppression.

CHINESE HERBS AND OBESITY

Have we figured out yet that diets don’t work? If you are on a diet, often you may lose weight while you are on that diet, but statistics show that most people later on gain back not only the weight they lost, but a few extra pounds in addition!
Is it important to you to lose weight without using weight loss drugs? Did you know that Chinese herbs can help?
As evidenced by a long history of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Chinese are well versed in how to promote healing and good health. Chinese herbs can be especially useful in boosting metabolism and most of these herbs can be easily found at a health food store.
Chinese herbs are useful in weight loss in three ways:
1) to help speed-up digestion
2) to boost metabolism
and
3) to assist detoxification
Some herbs in the Chinese tradition which are helpful for weight loss are classified as “medicinal” herbs.  In this article, we are going to focus more on the “tonic” herbs classification, because the tonic herbs are generally safe for anyone to take on a regular basis, whereas it would be recommended to consult with an expert before starting a program of medicinal herbs.
Metabolism-boosting herbs include things like astragalus, ginseng, cordyceps, eucommia, cinnamon, ginger, and epimedium. Detoxifying herbs can help reduce appetite and include things like coptis, scute, longan, bupleurum, salvia and others.
Chinese herbs for weight loss help to build up digestive energy. If digestion speeds up, more elements from the food can be digested properly and taken away from the body before they transform into fat. Used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, metabolism-boosting herbs help people to lose weight.
A great example of a metabolism-boosting herb is Ginseng. When the qi/chi, and yang energy are increased, metabolism can get a boost. Ginseng is a popular herb used to boost energy and prevent heart disease. Ginseng has antioxidant properties and can help to overcome fatigue and increase energy. It can help lower high blood pressure, which results in a healthier cardiovascular system.
To gain maximum benefits from Ginseng, one should use a maximum of 1g of ginseng daily for 2-3 weeks and then take a break, and start again. While ginseng boosts metabolism and increases energy, it may even encourage people who consume it to increase their regular exercise routine. Simultaneously, Ginseng helps improve digestion, which in turn aids in fat burning. Ginseng can be especially beneficial to those who gain weight in the abdomen.

GINGER

As important as WHAT you eat is HOW you eat. Here are some more tips to maximize weight loss, no
matter what program you are on:
Eat regularly
Eating regularly will increase assimilation of nutrients. Nature is rhythmic, and likewise, your body
adjusts to natural cycles. The cycle of hunger and satiety fits this pattern. Timing is important for optimal
digestion, providing the correct quantities of digestive fluids and enzymes at just the right time.
Be present
As you eat, notice what you are thinking about. Are you noticing the taste of the food and how it feels
in your mouth or are you thinking of the next task that has to be accomplished? Forgive yourself for
any lack of presence and just practice returning your attention to the present moment. When you are
present, you will feel more satisfied by less food.
Eat moderately
Science has shown that calorie restriction is one of the best ways to achieve longevity. You may not
want to count every single calorie you ingest, but it’s a good idea to have a general sense of what
you eat in a day. If you eat more than 1500 calories in a day, chances are, you will not be losing much
weight. On the other hand, it’s important to eat at least 1000 calories a day to maintain energy for your
body’s needs.
Take inventory of your life
Overeating is a sign that food holds too much importance in your life. There are many other pleasures in
life besides food. Take up a new hobby. Learn a new language. Make some new friends. Add something
pleasurable to your life. Try something different, start a new project, go somewhere you’ve never been
before. Challenge yourself to add fulfillment to your life in ways other than by adding calories.
Chinese herbsWhen including Chinese herbs in your program to lose weight, make sure you drink lots of water to help
flush out toxins and stay hydrated. Adding Chinese tonic herbs to your routine can not only help lose
weight and boost metabolism, but you may feel more energy, may need less sleep and find immune
system benefits as well.
Perseverance Works!Don’t give up! If you do not give up, eventually you will succeed!

WHAT IS AN ALLERGY???

Allergies and food intolerance's can cause symptoms including, rash, itch, runny nose, sneezing, headache, red or dry eyes, inflammation, irritation, aches and pains, toxic overload, bowel and digestive upset,
Flu like symptoms, low immune system, nutritional deficiencies, organ and system imbalances, raised PH levels and chronic fatigue.  This can lead to illness or trigger existing conditions.  We treat a wide range of conditions. MUSCLE TESTING

Based on the concept of internal energy fundamental to traditional Chinese medicine, muscle testing is a non invasive way of evaluating the body’s imbalances and assessing its needs. It involves testing the body’s responses when applying slight pressure to a large muscle, to provide information on energy blockages, the functioning of the organs, nutritional deficiencies, and food sensitivities, among other things.

VEGA / BIO-RESONANCE TESTING

Bio-energetic balancing is based on the principles that the body retains a quantum energy memory of everything it experiences, both positive and negative.
Much illness starts with emotional, mental or psychological trauma that eventually causes pathological changes in the body. Throughout our lifetime the accumulated negative effect of past infections, toxins, mental and physical traumas gradually impede the free flow of vital energy / qi around the meridian system, of the body. This can lead to illness, or make pre-existing conditions worse.

DIET AND NUTRITION

Weather it is to improve fertility, reduce stress, or  simply increase energy, it is important that we are eating the right foods, that these foods are being broken down properly and that the nutrition from these foods is properly absorbed.  Symptoms of deficiency or mal-absorption of nutrition are numerous and need to be identified and treated ASAP.

CHINESE MEDICINE

In Chinese medicine, health is at its optimum when there is  natural balance between yin and yang, smooth flow of Qi/energy and harmony amongst the organs. Organ imbalances can occur were there is  exhaustion, pain, allergies,  stress,  infections, poor diet and lifestyle insomnia etc.  It is important to identify and treat these imbalances as soon as possible to avoid illness.

Acupuncture - The insertion of very fine disposable needles into specific points to restore health. It can restore the balance between yin and yang, smooth flow of qi/energy, and harmony between the organs.
Auricular acupuncture - (needle free) is simple pain free and safe. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions eg. Fertility issues , stop smoking, weight loss, stress, fears and phobias, and allergies. It is suitable to use on children and the elderly.Chinese herbs have been used for hundreds of years. Specific herbal formulas can be used to successfully treat most conditions eg. Allergy symptoms ( sneezing itching pain) increase absorption of nutrition, improve immune system, stress, candida, infertility, fatigue, IBS, asthma, skin problems, weight gain or loss, and to detox the system. Any Chinese herbs that are recommended will be fully licenced.

TOXINS

Our systems are bombarded with toxins every day.  For example, air pollution, drugs, heavy metals, excess salt and sugar, preservatives and additives, chemicals and fumes.  Allergies can cause toxin levels to rise within the body.  Many toxins are fat soluble and are stored in the fatty parts of the body.  Symptoms can include allergy reactions, Premenstrual Syndrome, weight gain, joint pain, bad breath, headaches, constipation, digestive upset, premature ageing, poor concentration, fluid retention, Candida, gallstones, acne, bad breath, body odor, erratic blood sugar levels and M.E.  Toxins can be stored in many parts of the body. The bodies ability to detox can be enhanced by diet, lifestyle and chinese medicine.

PH / ACID BALANCE

PH balance / acid balance can be altered by diet, stress, infection, and allergies. Acid can cause or trigger existing conditions  eg.  gout, acne, aches and pains, indigestion, psoriasis, red itchy skin, cellulite, heartburn, constant fatigue and illness. PH can be enhanced by diet nutrition and chinese medicine.

ALLERGIES

WHAT IS AN ALLERGY???

An allergy is the body's immunological reaction to a foreign substance.  In a healthy immune system, the body will release histamines.  Histamines trigger the inflammatory response, which is the body's natural "Call to Arms". A balanced inflammatory response has two main purposes: to remove harmful invaders, or damaged tissues, and to begin the healing process.
Unfortunately, when an immune system is out of balance, or overwhelmed, the inflammatory response goes haywire.  Seasonal allergies, food allergies, and skin allergies are all examples of this.  Once the inflammatory process gets started, it can be difficult to get it back under control if you are stressed, vitamin deficient, or if your immune system is unknowingly compromised.

This can cause an array of symptoms some mild while others can be severe and last for periods of time. Eg. inflammation, irritation, fluid retention, itching, fatigue, digestive upset, pain, flu like symptoms, weight loss/gain , mood swings, Premenstrual Syndrome, hormonal imbalance,  Candida, nutritional deficiencies, toxic overload, organ imbalances, disruption in ph balance and insomnia.  In severe cases an allergic reaction can lead to Anaphalactic shock.

Allergies can affect almost any part of the body and be caused by an ever increasing range of natural or artificial substances eg chemicals, airborne substances like dust mite, food and drink, animals, environmental, preservatives and additives.  Allergies can be the sole cause of illness or act as a trigger to existing conditions.

TYPES OF ALLERGIES

The most common are dermatitis, eczema, urticaria (nettle rash/hives) and psoriasis.  Symptoms can include itching, redness, pain, swelling, sores, pustules, rashes, and acne.  Causes can include allergies to certain foods, drugs, perfumes, chemicals and animals, poor diet, stress, nutritional deficiencies and organ imbalances.

Eye and Ear

Allergies can cause the eyes to water swell become sore red and irritated.  The ears can also be affected causing itching internally and externally, fluid can also build up inside the ear causing pressure a ringing sensation and temporary deafness.

Some common nasal conditions which are caused or triggered by allergies include rhinitis, sinusitis and hay fever.  Symptoms can include sneezing, nasal discharge, headache, stuffiness, flu like symptoms and congestion.  Chest conditions can manifest with symptoms such as coughing with or without phlegm, susceptibility to colds and flu, sensitivity to drafts or chills

attacks can be brought on by an allergic reaction to foods and airborne substances. Symptoms can include wheezing, shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing, coughing and chest tightness.

FOOD ALLERGIES

The list of symptoms of food allergies is endless they include digestive upset, skin rash, organ imbalances, delayed immune response, mouth sores, mood swings, toxin build up, weight gain or loss, stress, headache, poor absorption of nutrients and irritable bowel syndrome.  Food allergies can upset the natural balance between good and bad bacteria leading to fungal infection.  They can also interfere with the bodies’ natural ph levels.

Candida is one of the most frequent conditions seen in the western world.  It often manifests itself as vaginal infection in women.  Causes can include allergies, poor diet, stress, nutritional deficiencies, poor immune system and antibiotic use.  Symptoms are wide and varied.  For example, thrush, nail infections, gas, bloating, constant hunger, bad breath, anal itching, severe dandruff, itchy flakey scalp, toxic overload, digestive and bowel upset, weight gain / loss and poor concentration.

IBS

IBS affects many people.  It manifests with severe pain, bloating, belching, stomach upset, constipation, diarrhoea, cramps, indigestion, spasm, anal itching, frequent and urgent bowel motions.  This condition can be very stressful, which in itself makes the condition worse.  Causes can include food allergies and food intolerance's, stress, nutritional deficiencies and organ imbalances.
PH balance / acid balance can be altered by food allergies and equally allergies can be caused by over acidity resulting in disorders such as gout, acne, aches and pains, indigestion, psoriasis, red itchy skin, cellulite, heartburn, constant fatigue and illness.

                                 STRESS

Allergies can put huge stress on almost any part of the system.  Equally stress, can interfere with the immune response, resulting in allergies.  It is important to keep stress at manageable levels so that the system can function properly.  A well balanced diet, regular aerobic exercise and continual water intake are essential to reduce stress.  Just as there are certain foods and drinks which raise stress levels there are also an array of supper foods that help to de-stress.  It is important to decrease stress inducing foods and increase de-stress foods.

TOXINS

Our systems are bombarded with toxins every day.  For example, air pollution, drugs, heavy metals, excess salt and sugar, preservatives and additives, chemicals and fumes.  Allergies can cause toxin levels to rise within the body.  Equally toxins can leave the body hyper sensitive to intolerance's and allergies.  Many toxins are fat soluble and are stored in the fatty parts of the body.  Symptoms can include allergy reactions, Premenstrual Syndrome, weight gain, joint pain, bad breath, headaches, constipation, digestive upset, premature ageing, poor concentration, fluid retention, Candida, gallstones, acne, bad breath, body odour, erratic blood sugar levels and M.E.  Toxins can be stored in many parts of the body.  It is therefore important to do a complete systems detox, to avoid toxic overload.

                              NUTRITION AND LIFESTYLE

Over time if allergies are left untreated nutritional deficiencies will occur.  To maintain good health it is important that we are getting adequate nutrition on a daily basis to support our lifestyle.  Nutrition is required for all of the bodies systems and functions.  It is important that we are eating the right foods, that these foods are being broken down properly, and that the nutrition from these foods is properly absorbed.  Symptoms of deficiency or mal-absorption of nutrition are numerous and need to be identified and treated ASAP. Specific nutritional supplements can also be used to improve the immune system, treat stress, balance ph and intestinal flora (good bacteria).  All nutrition recommended will be fully licensed.
Where needed, simple lifestyle changes that can make a big difference to your health will be advised.  Particular attention will be given to increasing intake of foods that heal and decreasing intake of foods that harm.  Regular exercise, depending on your health, and adequate water and sleep.  Stress management may also be advised.

           CHINESE MEDICINE AND ALLERGIES

  • work to
  • Balance the immune system
  • Reduce the inflammatory response
  • Restore the body's natural healing process
  • Eliminate itching on skin, or in the eyes and throat
  • Bring holistic balance to the body
  • According to traditional Chinese medicine several patterns of disharmony may be involved in cases of allergies. In all cases, however, wind is part of the diagnosis, usually combining with another pathogenic influence in wind dampness, wind cold, or wind heat. Typical of patterns involving wind, allergy symptoms often occur without warning. In seasonal allergies, such as hay fever, the most common diagnosis is wind and dampness. This combination produces a sudden onset of symptoms: sneezing, itching eyes and throat, and a heavy sensation in the head, with copious mucus. The treatment strategy is to repel the wind with herbs that are dispersing in nature. Herbs that drain dampness are also employed in order to clear the nasal passages and sinuses.Treatment plans for allergies vary greatly, and the possible results range from temporary relief to complete remission. Acupuncture frequently relieves allergy symptoms immediately. Manipulation of points around the nose usually relieves the nasal congestion and sneezing as soon as the needles are inserted. The effects are long-term, and the allergy is virtually eliminated.
